How often should I get routine blood work?

The frequency of your blood work depends on both your health and your doctor’s discretion. The United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends certain blood tests depending on age and sex.

Blood work generally consists of a variety of different panels that check for very selective components in your blood, including electrolytes, hormones, and special proteins.

Preventative health care is an important aspect of medical practice and leads to significant improvements in overall health.

Appropriate screening and prevention interventions need to be prioritized both for effectiveness in modifying target outcomes and for risk of the condition in the individual patient.

Preventative counseling and routine blood work is recommended annually for adults >50 years without chronic conditions.

However, some patients with chronic conditions or disease may require blood work more routinely, and this should be discussed with your primary care provider in order to be individualized.

Blood work for individuals with underlying conditions may need to be performed as often as every 3 or 6 months. Talk to your provider, prevention is key.
